- Wow, what a pleasant surprise. The knife, spike and sheath work great. The knife is sharp out of the box and the marlinspike is just right, not too sharp tipped, as many are from various other makers / vendors. This kit was immediately useful and now lives on my sailboat. Planning on purchasing another for on shore use. - The knife is a solid five star knife. It replaced my version I received in the US Navy back in 1998 that fell into Lake Michigan this summer. I liked the Gen 2 scales (the handle)being made of Micarta as opposed to G10 as I find Micarta is not as slippery when hands are sweaty or wet. The leather sheath is an improvement over the Nylon/Velcro sheath my original came with but the marlin spike holder seems flimsy to me, but then, I was purchasing a knife, not a sheath. - I have been on the water professionally for over 29 years, 10 with the Navy, 13 with the Coast Guard, and 6 with the Merchant Marines and my original knife performed like a champ.
